Namaste,
Bhagvad Gita Chapter 1 sloka 45
Oh what a pity! Though possessed of intelligence we have set our mind on the commission of a great sin that due to lust for throne and enjoyment we are intent in killing our own kinsmen. ……Sloka 45
313]
You could almost hear Arjuna weeping here.
So distressed he is that he is falsely seeing the reasons for this battle.
All throughout his life he has been bullied, beaten, burnt, taunted, ridiculed, attempts made on his life, etc by Duryodhna. Now all of a sudden he has forgotten all this.
He now thinks he is fighting for lust and kingdom and enjoyment which we know is false!
There appears to be complete lack of cohesion in what he is saying.
314]
Its funny how we become so philosophical and righteous when something close to us is affected.
Arjuna was never concerned when he was killing hundreds of his other enemies.
But all of a sudden he has become a wise man since he has to kill his own.
He now speaks not as a warrior but as a wise man preaching the rights and wrong to Krishna!
315]
He again speaks of sin which he has not committed nor is he about to.
316]
This is quite a lamentation from Arjuna
A soldier weeps?
Quite an amazing outburst and never in the history of wars has a soldiers lamentation been written so dramatically. Never has a soldier expressed his feelings so dramatically.
Even today the anguish and pain that certain soldiers go through on the battle field is hardly talked about. Post traumatic war stress. We often hear about the pain and anguish after the battles.
We just assume that all soldiers are mentally prepared and that its easy for a soldier to take another life. This is not a mental disorder or illness but a natural human emotion.
This dilemma of Arjuna reminds me of King Ashoka who also after his many battles realised the folly of his ways and became deeply religious.

To understand Geeta is not so easy. but we should try to learn it gradually.
